Why Does My Filter Clog So Quickly?

Understand why filters clog prematurely and how to improve system performance.

A filter that clogs quickly is often dealing with more debris than expected or a screen that is too fine for the application. Rapid clogging can also occur when the filter is undersized, when organic material is present, or when upstream conditions change seasonally.

Likely Causes

  • High solids loading
  • Fine micron rating
  • Algae, biological growth, or organic debris
  • Filter selected by pipe size instead of flow rate
  • Insufficient screen area

Solving rapid clogging requires identifying what is in the water and whether the filter has enough screen area for the flow and debris load. A self-cleaning filter may be appropriate when manual cleaning becomes too frequent.
