How to Size an Automatic Self-Cleaning Filter

Learn how engineers size self-cleaning screen filters using flow rate, solids loading, and micron requirements.

Sizing an automatic self-cleaning filter requires more than matching the pipe diameter. The filter must be selected based on actual flow rate, micron rating, pressure conditions, solids loading, and the cleaning requirements of the application. A properly sized filter should maintain flow while cleaning itself efficiently.

Key Sizing Inputs

  • Required continuous flow rate
  • Desired micron rating
  • Inlet and outlet pressure
  • Type and quantity of suspended solids
  • Available flush flow and drain connection
  • Maximum acceptable pressure drop

A filter that is too small may experience high pressure drop, frequent flush cycles, and reduced performance. A filter that is properly sized around nominal flow will usually operate more reliably, clean more effectively, and provide better protection for downstream equipment.
