Why Are My Nozzles Plugging?

Identify the causes of plugged spray nozzles and how filtration can prevent them.

Plugged nozzles are often caused by suspended solids passing through the filtration system. Even small particles can accumulate in spray nozzles, irrigation emitters, cooling systems, and process equipment, leading to uneven flow, reduced efficiency, and maintenance problems.

What to Check

  • Current filter micron rating
  • Nozzle opening size
  • Condition of the filter screen
  • Bypass lines or unfiltered water paths
  • Debris type and particle size

Preventing nozzle plugging usually requires matching the filter screen to the smallest downstream openings. If nozzles continue to clog, the system may need a finer screen, better upstream filtration, or a self-cleaning filter that maintains performance during continuous operation.
