Automatic Filter Maintenance Checklist

Use this automatic filter maintenance checklist to inspect screens, flush valves, pressure readings, controls, drains, and operating trends.

Automatic filters reduce routine cleaning labor, but they still need inspection. The maintenance goal is to confirm that the filter is sensing screen loading correctly, cleaning effectively, discharging debris properly, and returning to an acceptable differential pressure after each flush cycle.[1][2]

Routine Checks

  • Record inlet pressure, outlet pressure, and differential pressure during normal operation
  • Confirm that the flush valve opens fully and closes reliably
  • Inspect the screen for damage, embedded debris, scale, biological matting, or unusual wear
  • Check pressure ports, tubing, gauges, and sensors for blockage or drift
  • Verify controller settings, alarms, manual override, and cleaning interval history
  • Inspect the drain line for restriction, backpressure, or unsafe discharge routing

The most useful maintenance records are trend records. A single inspection can show whether the filter is working today; a trend can show whether flush frequency is increasing, source water is changing, or the screen is gradually becoming harder to clean. That history helps separate normal water-quality variation from a developing mechanical problem.[3][4]

Maintenance should also include context from the system the filter protects. Cooling towers, irrigation systems, process loops, and membrane pretreatment trains all have different consequences when filtration degrades. The checklist should reflect the protected equipment, not just the filter housing.[5][6]
