Understanding Micron Ratings in Water Filtration

Learn what micron ratings mean and how they affect filtration performance.

A micron rating describes the approximate size of particles a filter is designed to remove. One micron is one-millionth of a meter, so smaller micron ratings capture finer particles. In screen filtration, the micron rating is usually related to the size of the openings in the screen element.

How Micron Ratings Affect Performance

  • Lower micron ratings capture smaller particles
  • Finer screens may create higher pressure drop
  • Very fine screens may require more frequent cleaning
  • The best micron rating depends on the equipment being protected

Choosing the correct micron rating requires balancing protection and flow performance. A screen that is too coarse may allow harmful debris through, while a screen that is too fine may clog quickly or create unnecessary pressure loss.
